The Importance of Rain Timing for Plant Reproduction

A new study published in the journal Ecology Letter, led by doctoral students Barel Tsafon and Or Gross, and supervised by Prof. Niv DeMalach of the Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment, reveals that the timing of drought is even more critical to plant reproduction than the total quantity of annual precipitation.

The researchers found that droughts in both spring and autumn shortened the flowering season. In addition, they found that plants adjust their flowering times quickly in response to competition from neighboring plants, without the need for slow genetic modification.
