A team of researchers led by Prof. Alexander Vainstein and Dr. Dominika Bednarczyk of the Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment have discovered that the gene responsible for the production of the colourful petals of the petunia flower also serves as a centeral regulator of the flower's scent.
This discovery offers potential for the development of the flowers with a stronger scent, which are currently lacking in the ornamental plant market.
