Prof. Yaacov Tsur of the Department of Environmental Economics and Management has found that democratic regimes are more environmentally friendly than non-democratic regimes.

In one example, referendum voting contributes to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions because the public is less exposed to pressure from lobbyists representing polluting companies than are elected officials.
