A study led by Prof. Ron Shahar of the Koret School of Veterinary Medicine reveals a rare mechanical feature of the dentin inside the teeth of Atlantic wolffish: when pressure is applied along the length of the tooth, the material also shrinks laterally.
This is the first time that such behavior has been documented in the calcium-containing tissue of vertebrates, and the finding may inspire the development of strong and durable synthetic materials. The study was published in Acta Biomaterialia.
