A new study led by Dr. Asaf Levy of the Institue of Environmental Sciences at the Faculty of Agriculture has uncovered an extensive exchange of genes between plants and bacteria.
The research team identified 75 genes that were transferred between the Arabidopsis plant and bacteria, influencing vital processes such as metabolism and hormone production. They also demonstrated that a bacterial gene could repair growth flaws in the plant.
The findings have potential biotechnological applications in agriculture.
